Azmat Z. Ahmad

Vice President, Clinical Systems, Albany Medical Center

A driven senior leader and clinical systems subject matter expert. Has 19+ years of global experience in healthcare technology consulting as well as on the vendor and provider side. This informs her ability to liaise between clinical/hospital personnel and drive requirements to success with technology solutions driving strategic change through the healthcare enterprise. In her 11 year tenure at Albany Medical Center, she has delivered clinical projects to success supporting the organization to achieve EMRAM Level 6 certification and currently working towards a Level 7.

Her experience prior to joining Albany Medical Center includes serving as a Client Results Executive for Cerner Corporation in the Northeast region where she worked with clients such as UPMC supporting the Joint Development Initiatives between Cerner and UPMC as well as the implementation and support of the Cerner Millennium application suite at other hospitals like Northwell Health and Hudson Valley Hospital. Prior to that she worked at Tata Consultancy Services in Mumbai, India and the Prince Sultan Cardiac Center in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Her current role as VP of Clinical Systems at Albany Med gives her oversight on all inpatient, outpatient and ancillary clinical applications at Albany Med. She serves as Experiential Faculty at the Albany College of Pharmacy, mentoring PharmD students during their IT rotation and is a member of the Business Analytics Advisory Board of the Lally School, RPI.

Azmat has a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and an MBA from the Lally School of Business, RPI where she was awarded the Herman Family Fellowship for Women in Entrepreneurship. Azmat was one of the recipients of the John Glaser scholarship at the CHIME Healthcare CIO boot camp, 2016.

I’m interested in serving as a Member-at-Large of the HIMSS, New York State Chapter for several reasons. I have the depth of knowledge and experience to contribute to the advancement of healthcare and the transformational changes required in the region. In my engagement with various state level entities such as HANYS, GHNYA, DOH and others, I have found that their efforts require and necessitate meaningful and challenging dialog with the provider, vendor and payer communities. Without such engagement, robust and expensive technology solutions are either not available to address real concerns or are thrust upon the population with arduous requirements that are unable to be met. My experience and position align well with the kinds of voices that state and federal agencies need to hear from, in order to shape this upcoming post-COVID-19 era.

William Duax

VP Information Services, Albany Medical Center

HIMSS continues to strengthen its advocacy for healthcare organizations and healthcare information management and systems professionals informing, influencing, and shaping federal and state policy and regulations.  I am interested in contributing to this cause as we, as an industry and a people, navigate and influence the continuous change in front of us.

Background:

Joined Albany Medical Center in 2006.  Promoted to current position of Vice President, Information Services in 2014, reporting to the Executive Vice President and System Chief Information and Analytics Officer.  Currently responsible for nearly 50 staff members supporting all medical college, business operations, web services, and data integration systems.

Member of the Board of Directors, Health Information Exchange of New York (Hixny) since 2015.  Current member of both the Executive Committee and the Nominating and Governance Committees of the Board.

Completed Cornell-HANYS Academy for Healthcare Leadership Advancement program in November 2015.

Awarded the John Glaser Scholarship by the College of Health Information Management Executives (CHIME) and completed CHIME Healthcare CIO Boot Camp in 2014.

Prior work history:

Carrier Refrigeration Operations division of Carrier Corporation 1996 – 2006

Andersen Consulting (Accenture) 1994 – 1996

Education:

MBA – Management Information Systems. State University of New York at Albany – 1994

Mary Joy Garcia-Dia, DNP, RN, FAAN

Program Director, Nursing Informatics, Information Technology Department at New York-Presbyterian

I am a highly driven registered professional nurse with a strong passion in promoting patient safety and improving quality outcomes. I bring over 18 years of nursing informatics experience and 14 years in critical care nursing. I am currently the Program Director, Nursing Informatics, Information Technology Department at New York-Presbyterian.  I had led multiple clinical systems and EMR installations in different capacities from Clinical Application Analyst, Project Lead, IT Manager and as Director of Clinical Systems in various healthcare systems in New York.  These hybrid skill sets in Nursing and Information Technology, clinical knowledge and implementation science expertise allow me to translate user requirements and collaborate effectively between IT Department and Nursing in driving projects and system optimization. One of the memorable projects that I have is leading a CPOE implementation in full circle starting from vendor selection, forming the dream team and big bang go-live. Ultimately, we received the First Interdisciplinary Team Award setting the precedence.

I am active in the community as the Immediate Chair of Kalusugan (aka Health) Coalition and National Advisory Committee Member for Research on Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Health. My research interest on mobile technology, resilience and empowerment are in peer-reviewed journals and book chapters. My passion in raising awareness on what nursing informatics motivated me to collaborate with colleagues where I authored a book Project Management in Nursing Informatics. My community

engagement and scholarly work led to my Fellowship in the New York Academy of Medicine and the American Academy of Nursing. As the President-elect of the Philippine Nurses Association of America, I launched the Heal our Nurses Campaign as part of the COVID-19 Task Force’s initiatives with the goal of addressing the mental well-being of our nurses and the community.

I learned along my professional journey that failure should not stop anyone and there are more lessons in failure than success. Failure builds character, resilience and respect. Team building is essential and we lean in each other’s strength to achieve our goals. Integrating the principles on high reliability organization promotes communication, drives transparency and engagement.  My article on Balancing Care with Technology is highly relevant as we consider the humane component and reimagine people, process and technology within the COVID-19 pandemic and/or what the future wave will look like utilizing innovative tools.

As an active member of local HIMSS in New York City, I met people who are willing to lend a hand and became my mentors. Running for the position of Director at Large will allow me to pay forward and share the organizational skills volunteering in non-profit organizations.
